_ABILITIES: Jude is Rieze Maxian, which means his combat and healing artes are channeled via spirit artes and those artes he can learn overtime with experience gathered from his Lilium Orb. In Tales of Xillia 2 they used Allium Orbs (which are the same damn thing, really). Convoluted jrpg bullshit aside he has some unique spirit artes. Healer when used in combat heals the party surrounding Jude and outside of combat is his most used arte during the story, it can be used to heal cuts, scratches, and stop external bleeding. The arte itself also seems to provide comfort to aches and pains, sometimes curing them. Moves like Demon Fist, Cerberus Strike, Palm Strike, Talon Storm, etc are all combat skills that can be utilized by Jude viva martial arts.

Jude also has some character specific abilities like his Snap Pivot and partner ability Restore. With Snap Pivot, when guarding and backstepping at the right moment, Jude can dodge the enemy's attack while finding an opening behind them. With Restore, when linked with partners he'll aid those who fall by picking them up and restoring some of their hp.

_PERSONALITY:

Jude Mathis coins the phrase ‘bleeding heart’ like you wouldn’t believe, often called a ‘do-gooder’ by several party members – even himself! It’s the defining trait that shapes Jude Mathis when looked at him from an overall perspective; kindness, sensitivity, honesty, loyalty, and compassionate. Those very traits lead Jude into overwhelming commitments not only in Tales of Xillia but also in Tales of Xillia 2, both the results of thinking of others well being before his own.

He finds it hard leaving people behind, usually found worrying over individuals in need even if he has no real idea how they could be helped. He’ll even worry over complete strangers. Much like with Elize, Jude takes her away from her toxic situation in Hamil hoping that somehow things will get better but not so unmotivated or lost that he doesn’t commit to his actions. He also sees things through, whether to prove his maturity or simply because he said he’d do so. Jude Mathis becomes very committed and juggles many of those commitments at once. Often so quick to jump that he can find himself without answers to serious problems, like Milla’s injury. During said injury, he feels empty – Millia’s mission couldn’t be completed without her ability to walk. It changes his perspective when Milla refuses to give up; he relates to her but also feels admiration. The event toughens him and starts shaping him into the character that’s Xillia 2!Jude. His commitment doesn’t come without faults… Jude becomes very attached which is the negative to that comes with dedication. It leads him to taking people unsuited for danger into dangerous situations (--Elize, Milla, Leia, himself) which could branch from growing up lonely. Though sometimes shy, Jude’s a social creature, he surrounds himself with others.

Something that lingers within Jude is his perfectionist nature; his mind seems to fixate on ‘fixing something perfectly’ over finding loopholes and working with what you have, much like in Xillia 2 with his several attempts at spyrite devices. Jude’s quick to trash something the moment it seems to cause more harm than good over working around what’s making the bad things occur, chock that up to perfectionism or maybe insecurities around failure. He never gives up though, so long as Jude believes something can be done… He loves learning which helps with that negative trait; it keeps him positive and provides some serious satisfaction when things work out. Jude might second guess completion, like in Xillia 2 when they visit the fractured dimension were his spyrite device was finally complete, but he takes those uncertainties and (with a little motivation from his friends) he uses that to push himself forward. For someone so logical, he keeps positive – preferring the ‘good news’ that he’ll find a way around their situation but not be completely blind to ignore what must be done. An example of this would be how he deals with Julius’s needed death, while some of the other characters reason ‘there has to be something!’ Jude starts growing quiet… almost doctorly as he delivers the bad news. His mannerisms tell the player when he’s not fond of his own logical conclusion more than anything.

Jude’s motivations are bettering their world and using the time he’s been given to give back, becoming a scientist and working on creating a suitable method in which both humans and spirits can coexist together in harmony without one taking from the other. That’s a pretty big responsibility--! Which this goal works out for him considering how compassionate and understand Jude tries to be. Let’s take the relationship he and Alvin have for example, even after the numerous back stabs Alvin deals to the party Jude forgives him. He doesn’t always trust him but our honor student cares about people… He doesn’t like dealing with conflict and would rather both parties meet eye to eye. That makes him a wonderful candidate for world restoration! Jude can even look past the disagreements he and Gaius – the main villain – have and understand were the king is coming from, only wanting what’s best for his people… Jude feels the same way! (--ha, with more peaceful intent…) He’s very friendly, sympathetic and easy to get along with.

The main difference between Jude in-between the two games would be his self esteem, in Tales of Xillia 2 he’s matured from the events of the first game. Jude’s grown more confident with his own opinions and has started standing by them. He’s more together, making his own path in life over following blindly (not that he doesn’t still meddle or worry when it comes to other people’s business). Outside the self-confidence boost and maturity he’s still that same Jude but one that can finally speak his mind. An example of his changes would be his opinion on Fractured Milla, when she starts accusing him of wanting her dead he speaks up. A younger Jude might not have known the right thing to say, much like how he didn’t know what to say when meeting Gaius for the first time.

His mannerisms reinforce that earlier mentioned sensitivity. Jude’s normally seen holding one of his arms, looking downward, digging his toe in circles on the ground or waiting patiently to speak – all external signs of a submissive nature. In Tales of Xillia 2 with the previously mentioned character Elle who’s only eight years old, Jude will talk eye level with her. With the oldest character, Rowen, he shows him respect and listens with patience. He’s a character that gives respect without actually asking for much in return, often taking teasing or criticism and has taught himself to ignore some of the more hurtful banter. He isn’t afraid to sound ignorant or young but Jude also see’s himself more mature than your average fifteen/sixteen year old. Around the adult characters Jude can’t hold himself mature enough to blend in though, he’s still a teenager who isn’t worldly – only intelligent. He’ll be the character that continues learning his whole life. I don’t think Doctor Mathis would have it any other way.
